Ancient Greece – Zeugitane – Carthage – Double Shekel

Description

This legendary coin is well centered on both the obverse and reverse. The billon metal is sound and the patina is uniform. A very fine example.

This coinage is very difficult to obtain. Very few coins have been sold to the public in recent years.

The Libyan Revolt or “Mercenary War” took place directly after the First Punic War in 241 BC. The mercenaries hired by the Carthaginians, no longer paid, rose up and took with them a large part of the civilian population. The conflict was calmed by Hamilcar Barca, father of Hannibal.
